The trombone is a musical instrument from the brass family. Variants such as the valve trombone and the superbone have three valves similar to those of the trumpet. The word "trombone" derives from the Italian Tromba and -one, so the name means "great trumpet". The most frequently encountered trombones are the tenor trombone and the bass trombone. The once common E ♭ alto trombone became less widely used as improvements in technique extended the tenor's upper range, but it is now being reborn due to its lighter tone which is appreciated in many classical works and romantic. Trombone music is usually written in concert pitch in bass clef or tenor clef, although exceptions occur, particularly in British fanfare music where the tenor trombone is presented as a transposing instrument in B ♭, written in treble clef.
