Criminology is the study of crime and deviant behavior. Criminology is an interdisciplinary field in both behavioral and social sciences, primarily based on the research of sociologists, psychologists, philosophers, psychiatrists, biologists, social anthropologists and legal scientists. The term criminology was coined as Criminologia in 1885 by the Italian law professor Raffaele Garofalo. After the first quarter of the twentieth century, great progress was made in criminology. The first American criminology textbook was written in 1920 by the sociologist Maurice Parmalee under the Criminology title. The programs were developed for a specific purpose to train students to become criminologists, but development was rather slow. Criminologists are people who research and work in all details of criminology. Criminologists often look for the behavioral patterns of a potential criminal in hopes of finding a particular perpetrator. They also conduct research and investigations, develop theories and draw conclusions, and often do not solve crimes
