Clarinet is a family of wind instruments. A person who plays the clarinet is called a clarinettist. It is generally believed that Johann Christoph Denner invented the clarinet in Germany in the 1700s by adding a registration key to the earlier chalumeau, usually in the key of C. In modern times, the most common clarinet is the B 'clarinet. However, the clarinet in A, which is half a tone lower, is regularly used in orchestra, chamber and solo music. An orchestral clarinettist should own a clarinet in both A and B, as the repertoire is split fairly evenly between the two. Since the mid-19th century, bass clarinet has become an important addition to the orchestra. The clarinet family ranges from the BBB ♭ octo-contrabass to the A piccolo clarinet. The clarinet has proven to be an extremely flexible instrument in its classical repertoire, as in concert bands, military bands, march bands, klezmer, jazz and other styles
